[FARE] UEFA EURO 2008T: Observers record racism and homophobia, but welcome greater vigilance

Observers record racism and homophobia at UEFA EURO 2008(tm) but welcome greater vigilance

The Football Against Racism in Europe (FARE) network today presents a report into incidents of racism and discrimination at UEFA EURO 2008(tm).The network reports that overall the tournament has passed with isolated incidents given the numbers of supporters attending, but notes "a number of issues that are a cause for concern".

FARE has had monitors from twelve nationalities inside stadiums at each of the 30 games, in fan zones and in streets nearby to stadiums, tasked with reporting back on abuse and harassment arising from racism and other forms of discriminatory behaviour.

The FARE observers have recorded incidents including examples of racism, far-right activity, extreme nationalism, and homophobia. All reports are being passed to governing body UEFA and EURO 2008 SA where the UEFA control and disciplinary body will investigate the incidents.

In part the incidents reflect greater vigilance with increased levels of monitoring and more visible messages such as the Unite Against Racism programme, which has included a FARE training guide for staff working at stadiums on how to identify and deal with racism and racist symbols.

Kurt Wachter from Austrian FARE partner FairPlay-vidc said,
"As the NGO network concerned about the potential levels of racism and discrimination at the UEFA EURO 2008 championship we have seen that the majority of fans have had a positive experience.

"However our observers have first hand evidence of enough incidents to know that the problem has far from disappeared.

"There are a number of issues that cause concern, such as the continuing presence of far-right symbols at games and around stadiums. It's also disappointing to see the levels of homophobia in mainstream fan culture.

"It is a shame, for example, that thousands of members of the Oranje army of Holland have been singing homophobic songs directed at Luca Toni, and that some Croatian, Italian, Spanish, Russian and German fans have used gestures, symbols and chants to associate their support to the far-right.

The challenges for FARE remain clear as the work continues beyond the Euros.

BeobachterInnen verzeichnen Rassismus und Homophobie bei der UEFA EURO 2008(tm), begrüßen jedoch gleichzeitig die erhöhte Wachsamkeit

Das internationale Antirassismusnetzwerk FARE - Football Against Racism in Europe stellt heute seinen Bericht über rassistische und diskriminierende Vorfälle bei der UEFA EURO 2008(tm) vor. FARE kommt zum Schluss, dass im Verlauf des Turniers, gemessen an der Gesamtzahl an Fans, nur isolierte Vorfälle zu verzeichnen waren, aber, "eine Reihe von Problemen bieten Anlass zur Sorge ".

FARE hat BeobachterInnen aus zwölf Nationen bei jedem der bisherigen 30 Spiele in den Stadien Fanzonen und den Straßen in der Nähe der Stadien eingesetzt, die rassistisch oder anderweitig diskriminierend motivierte Vorfälle und Belästigungen identifiziert und dokumentiert haben.

Alle beobachteten Vorfälle von Rassismus, Rechtsextremismus, Nationalismus und Homophobie wurden schriftlich und bildlich festgehalten. Die Berichte werden an den Verband UEFA und die EURO 2008 SA weitergeleitet, woraufhin die Kontroll- und Disziplinarabteilungen der UEFA die Vorfälle untersuchen werden. Das Vorfälle identifiziert wurden ist ein Zeichen von erhöhter Wachsamkeit und verbesserter Beobachtung. Dazu hat wesentlich ein, im Rahmen der FARE Kampagne "Unite Against Racism" bei der UEFA EURO 2008(tm), erarbeiteter Schulungsleitfaden für StadionmitarbeiterInnen beigetragen. Dieser informiert genau darüber, wie man rassistische und rechtsradikale Symbole erkennt und damit umgeht.

Kurt Wachter von der österreichischen FARE Partnerorganisation FairPlay-vidc, erläutert: 
"Als ein nichtstaatliches Netzwerk, das besorgt über das potenzielle Niveau von Rassismus und Diskriminierung bei der UEFA EURO 2008(tm) ist, haben wir gesehen, dass die Mehrzahl der Fans positive Erfahrungen gemacht haben. Unsere BeobachterInnen haben jedoch genügend direkte Hinweise auf Vorfälle, die zeigen, dass das Problem bei weitem nicht verschwunden ist. Es gibt eine Reihe von Besorgnis erregenden Problemen, wie etwa die nach wie vor zu verzeichnende Präsenz rechtsextremistischer Symbole bei den Spielen und in der Nähe der Stadien. Enttäuschend ist auch der in der Mainstream-Fankultur zu beobachtende Grad der Homophobie."

"Es ist eine Schande, dass tausende Angehörige der niederländischen Oranje-Armee homophobe Lieder gegen Luca Toni gesungen haben, und dass kroatische, italienische, spanische, russische und deutsche Fans Gesten, Symbole und Gesänge benutzt haben, um ihre Unterstützung des Rechtsextremismus zu bekunden", nennt Kurt Wachter konkrete Bespiele.

Die Herausforderungen für FARE sind klar, und die Arbeit geht nach der Fußball-Europameisterschaft weiter.
