Captains to lead message of equality at EURO 2008 semi-finals

The activities of the Unite Against Racism campaign in Austria and Switzerland take centre stage this week as the team captains of the UEFA Euro 2008 semi-finalists will deliver a message against racism and for diversity directly from the pitch. 

Michael Ballack of Germany and Recber Rüstü of Turkey as well as Iker Casillas of Spain and Sergei Semak of Russia will speak to fans through the stadium loudspeaker systems in Basel and Vienna during their teams line-up after the national anthems. The teams will also be flanked by two huge Unite Against Racism flags.

Before kick-off all, fans are invited to join an anti-racism choreography. All of the 40,000 spectators in Basel and the 50,000 spectators in Vienna will find a bib with the message 'No to Racism' on their seat. Fans will be encouraged to lift their yellow, green, blue and red bibs in unison. 

UEFA President Michel Platini welcomed the activities, "The Unite Against Racism campaign serves to demonstrate our respect for diversity. We're determined to ensure that major footballing events like the Euro are played in an environment of harmony and respect."

The initiative is part of a series of messages that will involve pitch side boards that have made such an impact throughout the tournament, the wearing of captains armbands and the screening of the anti-racism video spot at each match that have become an intrinsic part of this years campaign.

Piara Powar, from UK FARE member Kick It Out, said,
"The 'Unite Against Racism' campaign has captured fans imagination's through a highly visible presence inside and outside stadiums.

"The semi-final captain's will reinforce just how important it is to tackle discrimination in all its forms. This years activities have marked a watershed in the way this social message has been communicated."

Kapitäne verlesen Botschaft der Gleichheit bei den Halbfinale der UEFA EURO 2008(tm) 

Die Mannschaftskapitäne der Halbfinalisten bei der UEFA EURO 2008(tm)  werden direkt vom Spielfeld eine Botschaft gegen Rassismus und für Vielfältigkeit verlesen - dies markiert den Höhepunkt der Kampagne Vereint gegen Rassismus bei der UEFA Europameisterschaft.  

DFB-Teamkapitän Michael Ballack und der türkische Spielführer Recber Rüstü sowie Iker Casillas (Spanien) und Sergei Semak (Russland) werden nach den Nationalhymnen über die Stadionlautsprecher zu den Fans in Basel und Wien sprechen. Die Teams  werden bei der Mannschaftsaufstellung von zwei riesigen Flaggen mit der Aufschrift "Unite Against Racism" flankiert.

Vor dem Anpfiff werden alle Fans eingeladen bei einer speziellen Antirassismus-Choreografie mitzumachen. Alle 40.000 StadionbesucherInnen in Basel und die 50.000 BesucherInnen in Wien werden auf ihren Sitzen eine Schürze mit der Botschaft 'No to Racism' (Nein zu Rassismus) finden. Die Fans werden aufgefordert ihre gelben, grünen, blauen und roten Schürzen hochzuhalten, damit eine La-Ola Welle durch das Stadion geht.

UEFA-Präsident Michel Platini begrüßt die Aktivitäten: 
"Die Kampagne 'Unite Against Racism' zeigt unseren Respekt für Vielfalt. Wir sind fest entschlossen, bei großen Fußballturnieren wie der EURO sicherzustellen, dass die Spiele in einer harmonischen und respektvollen Atmosphäre ausgetragen werden können", so Platini. 

Diese Initiative ist Teil einer Serie von Botschaften gegen Rassismus die im Stadion sichtbar sind. Dazu gehören eine Bandenwerbung, die während des Turniers eine hohe Aufmerksamkeit erzeugt hat, die Kapitänsarmbinden und der von FARE produzierte Anti-Rassismus-Spot bei jedem Spiel. Diese Elemente sind zu einem integralen Bestandteil der UEFA EURO 2008 geworden.

Piara Powar von der britischen FARE Mitgliedsorganisation Kick It Out, sagt hierzu:
"Die Kampagne  'Vereint gegen Rassismus' hat die Aufmerksamkeit der Fans durch eine hohe visuelle Präsenz innerhalb und außerhalb der Stadien erreicht. Die Kapitäne der Halbfinalisten werden noch einmal bekräftigen, wie wichtig es ist, Diskriminierung in jeder Form zu bekämpfen. Die Aktivitäten dieses Jahres markieren einen Wendepunkt bei der Art, wie diese soziale Botschaft kommuniziert wird.".
